From revolutionizing education in Ladakh to leading climate campaigns and public protests, Sonam Wangchuk has become one of India's most influential public figures. The engineer, educationist, innovator, and climate activist is once again in the spotlight following protests, government action, and investigations involving institutions within the nation.
While he is widely celebrated for his contributions to sustainable innovation and educational reform, he has also faced scrutiny over allegations related to land allotment, financial irregularities, and activism. As fresh developments keep him in the headlines, here's a closer look at Sonam Wangchuk's life, achievements, and the controversies that continue to shape his public image.
Where It All Began: The Early Years That Shaped Sonam Wangchuk
Sonam Wangchuk is an innovator born on September 1, 1966, in Uleytokpo, Ladakh. With limited access to formal education due to the lack of proper institutions in the Himalayan region, he struggled to understand unfamiliar languages while studying in a system that did not serve his region's needs. He studied engineering and graduated from the National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College), Srinagar, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Instead of pursuing a conventional engineering career, he chose to improve the education system of his homeland. He sought to reform a system that did not serve the best interests of students in his region. His vision was to create an education model rooted in local culture, language, and real-life experiences rather than one detached from the lives and needs of the people it was meant to serve.
The Journey of this Innovator
One of Sonam Wangchuk's biggest achievements is co-founding the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL). SECMOL was established to support students who struggled with the conventional education system. Its primary goal was to provide an alternative model of education that equipped students with practical knowledge and skills relevant to their daily lives.
SECMOL focuses on practical learning, life skills, renewable energy, and community participation, helping students learn in a way that aligns with their local environment and everyday experiences.
In addition to SECMOL, Wangchuk gained recognition for his work in developing sustainable technologies for Ladakh. Sonam Wangchuk's inventions include the Ice Stupa Project, an artificial glacier initiative designed to harvest and store winter water for use during the dry season. The cone-shaped ice structures resemble Buddhist stupas and have emerged as an innovative solution to water scarcity caused by climate change.
Wangchuk has also worked extensively to promote sustainable development and raise awareness about environmental challenges in the Himalayas. Through numerous initiatives aimed at preserving Ladakh's fragile ecosystem, he has made significant contributions to environmental conservation. His work has earned him several prestigious honours, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, often regarded as Asia's highest honour for public service.
What Put Sonam Wangchuk Back in the Headlines?
In recent years, Wangchuk has been at the forefront of several movements demanding constitutional safeguards for Ladakh. He has advocated for including Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution to protect the region's fragile ecology, indigenous culture, and tribal rights. His non-violent protests and hunger strikes have gained widespread public support, drawing nationwide attention to the cause.
The issues surrounding governance, ecology, and sustainable development in the Himalayas have remained at the forefront of national debate. At the same time, allegations of corruption and the misappropriation of funds involving Wangchuk have surfaced over the years, leading to investigations and public scrutiny.
The NEET-UG Paper Leak Controversy
In June 2026, Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of students protesting the alleged NEET-UG paper leak and the growing concerns over examination irregularities in India. He demanded a transparent investigation into the paper leak, comprehensive reforms to strengthen the examination system, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged administrative failures.
The demands also included compensation for the families of students who reportedly died by suicide in connection with the controversy, and an assurance that peaceful protesters would not face legal action. Wangchuk argued that repeated examination scandals had severely undermined public trust in India's education system and called for long-term structural reforms instead of temporary fixes.
The hunger strike soon became a nationwide movement demanding accountability in India's examination system. After 26 days of fasting, Wangchuk ended his protest following negotiations with the Centre. In the days that followed, the government accepted several key demands: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, the Centre agreed to provide compensation to the families of students who reportedly died by suicide in connection with the NEET controversy, promised to withdraw cases filed against peaceful protesters, and committed to broader discussions on examination reforms.
These developments marked a significant victory for the protest, although many students and education activists continue to press for the timely implementation of the promised reforms.
The Land Allotment Dispute
One of the biggest controversies involving Wangchuk is related to the land allotted to the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). According to reports, HIAL was allocated nearly 135 acres of land to establish a university. As per the allegations, the institute misused the government's grant by failing to comply with the lease terms, including the non-payment of rent for several years. The lease agreement also reportedly required the university project to show progress within a stipulated timeframe. However, HIAL is said to have applied for approval to establish the university only in 2022, several years after the land was allotted.
The government alleged that it had issued multiple notices to the institute for not complying with the lease conditions. Wangchuk, however, maintained that the lease process was delayed due to regulatory and administrative hurdles. Following the revocation of the land allotment, he alleged that he had become the target of a "witch hunt."
Another allegation involved HIAL's request for a waiver of the premium amount of around ₹14 crore. According to reports, the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) did not approve or sanction the requested waiver.
CBI Preliminary Enquiry into FCRA Allegations
Another controversy emerged after reports revealed that the CBI opened a preliminary inquiry, based on information from the Ministry of Home Affairs, into alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) by Wangchuk and the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).
According to the reports, citing anonymous government officials, the investigation agency is examining allegations that Wangchuk and HIAL received local donations in an account designated for FCRA funds, accepted payments from overseas before obtaining FCRA registration, and operated multiple bank accounts that were allegedly not disclosed in official documents.
The reports further claimed that HIAL received ₹1.5 crore in foreign contributions before obtaining FCRA registration and that several bank accounts were allegedly not disclosed, according to government officials. It was also alleged that the CBI is examining transactions linked to another firm associated with Wangchuk, Sheshyon Innovation Private Limited. In addition, the reports stated that the agency is investigating allegations that Wangchuk's personal accounts received foreign remittances or payments. The inquiry also covers alleged outward foreign transactions made from these accounts in 2021 and 2024. Government sources reportedly described these transactions as suspicious and said they warranted further investigation.
Wangchuk has denied the allegations, stating that neither he nor his institutions received foreign donations illegally. He argued that the funds received from abroad were payments for consultancy services rather than charitable donations, as alleged by the authorities. He also accused the government of attempting to undermine his work and institutions. According to Wangchuk, the money earned through his institutes' consultancy services represented payment for the "export of knowledge", not foreign donations. At the time the reports were published, the CBI's inquiry was still in its preliminary stages, and no charges had been proven against him in court.
Other Recent Controversies
Wangchuk has also faced criticism for his political activism. Following the unrest in Ladakh in 2025, reports alleged that he had encouraged the violence. However, Wangchuk has denied these allegations, maintaining that his demonstrations have always been peaceful and democratic.
His visit to Pakistan in early 2025 to attend an environmental conference also drew attention in India. This happened after some Pakistani social media accounts expressed support for his environmental campaigns. Although the visit was focused on environmental issues, it sparked political debate in India.
Wangchuk has frequently undertaken hunger strikes to demand constitutional safeguards for Ladakh and has also advocated for education-related reforms. His protests have received widespread media coverage, further shaping public perception of his activism.
Conclusion
Sonam Wangchuk is well-known for his contributions to education, environment, and sustainable development in Ladakh. His innovative initiatives and activities gained popularity both within the country and outside the country. However, the emergence of recent controversies and investigative reports about the institutes associated with him attracted greater public attention to the figure. In this regard, it is possible to suggest that the controversy around Wangchuk will continue as long as the investigations are ongoing.
